Gynecology

Sarah Hodgson MD FRCSC

Dr. Sarah Hodgson was born and spent her early childhood in Kenya, and then went on to complete her medical school and Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training through the University of British Columbia. She completed extra elective training in menopause medicine and obtained her NAMS (North American Menopause Society) certification. As a general OB/GYN her other interests include advanced laparoscopic gynecologic surgery and promoting international women’s health in low resource settings. She recently spent a year volunteering at a mission hospital in Kenya. She is actively involved in continuing medical education, promoting evidence based gynecologic care in our community as co-chair of the organizing committee for the annual Victoria Gynecology Update conference for the past 4 years.

Harold Hunt MD FRCSC

Dr. Harold Hunt is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of British Columbia.

He completed his medical degree at The University of Western Ontario and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of British Columbia. He has practiced on Vancouver Island for more than 20 years. He is the former head of the department of Gynecology for the South Island. He has a keen interest in education and has received several teaching awards. He was the inaugural director of the OBGYN Clerkship program in Victoria for the Island Medical Program. He was the organizer of the Primary Care Gynaecology Update for 5 years in Victoria. He is a member of the provincial Colposcopy Program involved in cervical screening and cancer treatment. His clinical interests include laparoscopic surgery and vulvar diseases.

David Quinlan MBBCH FRCOG FRCSC

Dr. David  Quinlan is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of British Columbia.

He received his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1983. Residency training was at the University of Natal, the University of Auckland and the University of British Columbia. He completed a 2-year Fellowship in Pelvic Surgery at the University of Utah (1993 – 1995). Dr. Quinlan has been a Visiting Consultant in Urogynaecology at both St George’s Hospital, London and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, University of Cambridge.

His clinical interests involve most aspects of gynecology and include both non-surgical and surgical management. He has a special interest in abnormal uterine bleeding, pre-invasive disease of the cervix and pelvic floor disorders.

Dr. Quinlan has extensive experience in international women’s health. He was awarded the 2012 Walter Mackenzie Fellowship in Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for fistula work in Ethiopia.

Dr. Quinlan is past president of the Western Society of Pelvic Medicine and was a board member of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada. He was Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Island Health. He is currently the Island Lead for the BC Cervical Cancer Screening Program.

Samantha Wong MD FRCSC

Dr Samantha Wong-Merrick received her medical degree and specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology at UBC in 2018. She has completed additional training in fertility and pelvic ultrasound. After practicing around southern Vancouver Island, she is thrilled to settle in Victoria. She provides consultative obstetric care through Victoria General Hospital. Her gynecology practice encompasses both medical and surgical care, but she has special interest in minimally invasive surgery.

Kim MacDonald MD MSc FRCSC

Dr. Kim MacDonald is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of British Columbia Dr. MacDonald completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Dalhousie University before completing a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UBC. Apart from his general clinical gynecology and surgery practice, Dr. MacDonald has clinical interests in high-risk pregnancy, early pregnancy assessment and pregnancy loss. As a complement to this work, he is a co-founder of the Pacific Perinatal Foundation which supports families with difficult pregnancy and fertility journeys through community events, emotional and financial support.

Marjon Blouw MD CCFP FCFP

Dr. Marjon Blouw received her degree in Family Practice from UBC in 1988. She worked in Family Practice until 2000 in Victoria BC. She started her practice in Sexual Medicine with an Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2000 – 2004 doing GP consults. Since 2004, Dr.Blouw works with patients, individuals or couples addressing concerns regarding problems with libido, arousal/erectile response, orgasm, ejaculation and pain with intercourse. She has been using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help patients make change since 2000.

Perinatology

Hayley Bos MD MPH FRCSC

Dr. Bos does not accept referrals for gynecology consultation.

Dr. Hayley Bos (she/her/hers) completed her medical degree at the University of Western Ontario and went on to complete her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialty fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. She completed her Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Bos is a Perinatologist in Victoria with special interests in complicated pregnancies and pre-conceptual counselling. She is the current Medical Director of Victoria General Hospital and Medical Director of Maternity for Island Health.

James Hayward MD FRCSC

Dr. Hayward does not accept referrals for gynecology consultation.

Dr. James Hayward (he/him/his) completed his medical degree in Victoria through the University of British Columbia. He then completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at BC Women’s Hospital. He specializes in medically complex pregnancies and pre-pregnancy planning for high-risk pregnancies. He has an interest and experience in working with marginalized populations and in medical education.

Kim MacDonald MD MSc FRCSC

MJ Harris RM

MJ (she/her/hers) received a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario and returned to Victoria to begin her practice as a midwife.

In recent years MJ has focused on providing care for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She is also part of the Full Circle Perinatal Care Team supporting people and families through the difficult and emotional experience of perinatal or infant grief and loss. MJ created and initiated the now-shared role of Perinatal Loss Health Navigator and spends time walking alongside people and families who are experiencing some of the most difficult days of their lives. In addition to her clinical work, MJ is also Island Health’s Medical Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

MJ is grateful to have spent her adult life raising her four children with her wife on the Ancestral territories of the Lekwungen-speaking people: the Esquimalt, Songhees, and WSANEC Nations. She identifies as queer and gender non-conforming.

Alison McRae-Millar RM

Ali (she/her/hers) is a Registered Midwife working with the team at Full Circle Perinatal Care to provide compassionate support to families in early pregnancy and to families experiencing perinatal loss.

With a background in History and Anthropology, including a master’s degree from the University of Victoria, Ali previously worked as a research manager supporting reconciliation efforts related to the legacies of residential school in Canada. She subsequently trained at the University of British Columbia as a midwife and practiced full scope midwifery in Victoria, providing prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care to birthing families. Drawing on her passions for perinatal health, advocacy, and family-centered care, Ali joined Full Circle Perinatal Care to assist families navigating complex fertility and pregnancy journeys and is deeply committed to providing empathetic and sensitive care for families experiencing perinatal loss. In support of this work, Ali holds a Certificate in Perinatal Grief and Loss.

Ali was raised in Victoria, and then spent many years living and working in Vancouver before returning to the Island in 2019. She has been exceptionally grateful to return to the beauty of Vancouver Island, and to live and work on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples.

Heather Strachan RN, RM

Heather Strachan (she/her/hers) was educated in England and received her Diploma in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Midwifery  (University of Bedfordshire) and Post Graduate Diploma in Medical ultrasound (University of Hertfordshire).

Heather has 28 years experience as a Midwife/Obstetric Nurse with a clinical interest in various nursing fields, including hemodialysis, elderly care, obstetrics and especially, early pregnancy.

Stephanie Curran, R.TCM.P Acupuncture and Mindfulness

Stephanie (she/her/hers) is a Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner and the clinical director of the Elements of Health Centre. She has been supporting people in growing their families, during their pregnancies, and through postpartum since 2000. Stephanie also facilitates a variety of mindfulness programming (fertility, pregnancy loss, postpartum, chronic pelvic pain) and is a certified instructor of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through Brown University. Stephanie experienced a challenging fertility journey and cares deeply about supporting others through the heartache of infertility and/or loss.
